Not all evidence is dramatic. A single fibre, a fleck of paint, a few grains of soil — trace evidence is the small, easily transferred material that moves between people, objects and scenes, and it has quietly solved a great many cases.

The founding idea

Trace evidence exists because of Locard's exchange principle: whenever two things come into contact, each leaves something on the other. So a criminal both takes traces from a scene and leaves traces behind.

What counts as trace evidence

The usual categories include:

  • fibres from clothing, carpets and furnishings,
  • hairs,
  • glass fragments,
  • paint flakes,
  • soil, dust and pollen,
  • gunshot residue.

Each is tiny on its own, but collectively they can place a person somewhere, link a suspect to a victim, or connect two scenes.

Transfer, persistence and interpretation

Two ideas govern how useful a trace is: how readily it transfers, and how long it persists before being lost. A fibre might transfer easily but shed within hours; glass in a shoe sole may last days. Interpreting trace evidence means weighing both, and considering secondary transfer — material arriving indirectly.

Corroboration, not identification

Trace evidence rarely points to one individual the way DNA or a fingerprint can; most of it is class evidence. Its strength is corroborative — a bundle of consistent traces builds a picture that supports or undermines an account. Recovered carefully (tape-lifts, combings, careful packaging), it turns the overlooked small stuff into a quiet but persuasive part of the case.
