Fingerprints were the original biometric, but they now sit alongside face and iris recognition on phones, at borders and in police systems. Each identifies a person from a physical trait, yet they behave quite differently.

The three compared

  • Fingerprint — mature, well-understood, and a good balance of accuracy and convenience. Ridge detail is stable through life. It can be worn down by heavy manual work and needs contact with a sensor.
  • Face — the most convenient (no contact, works at a distance) but the most variable: lighting, ageing, expression, pose and even a mask affect it, and it can be more prone to error and spoofing.
  • Iris — among the most accurate and stable of all, with enormous detail in the coloured ring of the eye, but it needs a cooperative subject and specialised cameras.

Forensic prints are a different problem

There's a crucial distinction. Biometric capture is done live, under controlled conditions — a clean finger on a scanner, a face to a camera. Forensic fingerprints are usually latent marks left by chance: partial, smudged and distorted. Comparing a pristine enrolled print to a fresh scan is far easier than matching a fragment from a doorframe — which is why forensic fingerprint work relies on trained examiners, not just an algorithm.

Why it matters

No single biometric is best for everything: the right choice depends on whether you need convenience, maximum accuracy, or the ability to work from traces left unknowingly at a scene. Fingerprints endure because they strike a strong balance — and because, uniquely among the three, they're routinely left behind wherever people touch.
