When a shoe or tyre presses into soft ground, it leaves a three-dimensional impression — detailed, but fragile and easily destroyed by weather or footfall. Casting turns that fleeting mark into a permanent, examinable object.

Photograph first, always

Before anything touches the impression, it is photographed — with a scale, and with oblique (raking) lighting that throws the ridges and tread into relief. This matters because casting, though usually successful, can occasionally damage fine detail; the photograph is an insurance copy and evidence in its own right.

Casting the impression

The classic material is dental stone — a fine, hard gypsum that captures detail far better than ordinary plaster. It's mixed to a pourable consistency and gently poured into the impression (often against a barrier, and via a baffle so the falling mix doesn't damage the mark), then left to set before careful lifting, cleaning and drying.

Special situations need special methods:

  • Snow impressions are first fixed with a coloured aerosol wax (such as Snow Print Wax) to strengthen and highlight the detail before casting.
  • Tool marks, which are small and finely detailed, are cast with a fine silicone material (like Mikrosil) rather than dental stone.

Why it's worth the effort

A cast preserves the class and individual detail of a footwear, tyre or tool mark so it can be compared, in the laboratory and later in court, against a suspect's shoe, vehicle or tool. It converts a mark that would vanish by morning into evidence that can be examined for years.
