Blood doesn't just prove someone was injured — the way it lands can help reconstruct what happened. Bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) reads the size, shape and distribution of stains to test accounts of a violent event.

What patterns can indicate

Different actions leave different patterns:

  • Passive drops — blood falling under gravity.
  • Impact spatter — small droplets thrown out when a force strikes a blood source; finer droplets generally mean greater energy.
  • Transfer stains — a bloodied object or hand pressed onto a surface.
  • Cast-off — blood flung from a swinging object, and arterial patterns from a breached artery.

From the shape of individual stains, analysts estimate the direction and angle of impact (a rounder stain lands closer to 90°, an elongated one at a shallow angle), and by combining many stains they can estimate an approximate area of origin in space.

What it can establish

Used well, BPA can support or contradict a version of events — for example, whether a person was standing or lying when struck, or whether a scene was altered. It works alongside the autopsy and the rest of the scene, not in isolation.

An honest note on its limits

BPA has faced serious scientific scrutiny. Basic patterns are well understood, but complex scenes are open to interpretation, and studies have shown analysts can disagree. Responsible practitioners state conclusions conservatively, distinguish what the physics supports from what it doesn't, and avoid over-reading a chaotic scene.
